Before Thing 3 was born, I had registered to run in two other half marathons and never got to run.
The first was supposed to be the DRC Half on November 1, 2009. However, I caught a nasty stomach bug and was so dehydrated and worn out (lots of throwing up) that taking Thing 1 and Thing 2 trick-or-treating was a workout.
The second was to the Inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Dallas Half Marathon. in March of 2010. However, I was 3 or 4 months pregnant at the time and was having a few issues, so I had to take it easy for a while.
Now I am ready. Since two weeks postpartum I have been running. I started very slowly at first with more run/walking, than full out running. By the time Thing 3 was 2 months old I ran a 5K (my second fastest at the time.) I have run several more 5K since then. It has been awesome.
After that first run back, I knew I wanted a challenge. I am the type of person who needs challenges and goals to keep motivated. I wanted to attempt to (actually) run in a half marathon and it would be even better if I could do it before Thing 3 was 6 months old!
So I searched our local race calendar, and found two options that would fit. The first was the New Year’s Day Half Marathon and the second option was the Texas Half.
I chose the New Year’s Day Half Marathon, for a few reasons. One, it is a small race, so it will be easy for me to get to and from in a timely manner so I can nurse Thing 3 (I don’t have a big reserve at home.) Secondly, there will be fewer people around to see me if I die. Lastly, Thing 3 won’t even be 5 months old yet. I love the feeling of accomplishing my goals early.
I have been right on track with all of my training and I feel amazing. This weekend I am scheduled to run 10 miles. If I run over 10.23 miles it will be the longest run I have every completed, so I am super excited. I know, to all my non running friends out there, it is just crazy to be excited about running 10 miles.
So there you have my next big challenge.
