The terrible storm that left me and so many others in north Texas trapped in their houses for the last 4 days is finally over, for now. Yesterday we woke up to two inches of snow covering two inches of ice. By the time the day ended yesterday, we had 4+ total inches of snow.
Today however was a completely different story. When I woke up this morning it was a chilly 19 degrees, however, at 5pm, when I went for my first run, in 7 days, it was 55 degrees. However, tomorrow, there is a chance of rain/snow again, just in time for the Super Bowl.
However, you did read that right, I finally got to go on a run today! This was my first run since last Saturday when I completed an 11 mile run in record time. I had planned to get some cross training done while I was trapped inside, however, my three boys, fire alarms, and really cold temperatures in our house didn't allow for much cross training. I was lucky to be able to sit down and eat for 10 minutes.
I digress, back to my run. On my training plan for today, it called for 8 miles. However, the roads were really ready for that much running this morning, and I didn't get to run until this evening. So while my boys ate dinner, I headed out for a 3-4 mile run.
I told my husband 3 miles, because honestly I just didn't know how I was going to feel. I have not gone that long without even a little bit of a run since the two weeks after Thing 3's birth in August, and even then I was out walking every day. So this was a really long break for me.
I started out and I felt like I was going so slow. I had trouble finding a rhythm. I felt sluggish. My legs felt like jello. I thought I was doing terrible. I was getting frustrated because my running had been going so well this year and this stupid snow storm was going to mess up all of that. Then my watched chimed for the 1 mile mark. 10:11. I guess I wasn't going as slow as I thought. (If you just started following me, 1. THANK YOU and 2. I just recently started going below 10 minute miles. And by recently, I mean, besides a 5K in November, I just had my first race with sub 10 minute miles 2 weekends ago.) Once I saw that 10:11, it made sense why I was struggling so much.
The rest of my run was spent dodging lots of puddles and lots of traffic. Everyone and their dog was out in their cars going somewhere since the roads were no longer covered in sheets of ice.
My second mile 10:26. Third mile 10:28, and 4th mile with the turn around and an issues with a car and a puddle was 11:15. Overall, my average pace was 10:29. Right under the 10:30 minute per mile goal I had hoped to keep. Total time 41:58.This run made me realize why I don't need to take long breaks from my running. That first run back can be a shock to the system. I am just glad to have it done, so that I can spend this week getting back on track so that I can feel confident running a full marathon on May 1st.
However, this week is not going to make it easy. There is rain/snow in the forecast for tomorrow. I think Wednesday is calling for more snow and Thursday the temperatures are suppose to be really cold again. I live in Texas for a reason and this is not it. I don't have the clothes for this weather and I am not the biggest fan of the cold. Oh well, I will get it worked out.
Have a great weekend!
